What is Byte to Byte Search Engine?

Byte by byte comparison of files checks the contents of the two files character by character (in parallel). This method is 100% accurate.

What is Pattern Match?

Pattern Match is a new and unique search engine in Duplicate Finder 2011, and It helps you to find complex file names. See the examples below....

Example One:
"Look but you cant touch.mp3"
"Look but you cant touch_1.mp3"

Example Two:
"12 For All We Know.wma"
"10 For All We Know.wma"

As you can see the only difference in the filenames are last 2 characters the first example and first 2 characters in the second example.

To find files similar to the ones in the first example, we will use "*??" which will tell duplicate finder to ignore last 2 characters and match rest of the characters. To find files like the ones in the second example, we will use "??*". In pattern mode, you create filename masks to match the files you want to compare as possible duplicates. Wildcard characters include ? and *, which match either one instance (?) or multiple instances (*) of any character. Any other character included in the mask must be present in the filename for a file to be considered a possible duplicate.

What is Mp3 Search Engine?

Mp3 search engine is specially designed to find duplicate Mp3/Wma files. You can use Title, Artist, Album, and other tags. in the search criteria and you can also adjust similarity levels.

What is CRC32?

The CRC32 process reads each file from the beginning to the end, and calculates a unique number from the file's contents. This number is stored and used to compare this file's contents to another file's to determine if they are identical. This method caluclates a long integer (32 bits) from the file and is generally considered to be very accurate, since the files also have to be of the same size to match. CRC32 is the standard checksum used in ZIP-archives. The possibility of two different files being considered identical when using CRC32 is about 1 in 4,294,967,296.

Can I scan two or more hard drives at the same time?

Duplicate Finder 2011 supports scanning of multiple hard drives, including external drives like Media Players, Pen Drives and USB Hard Drives.

How does Duplicate Finder save hard disk space?

Duplicate files can appear on your system for a number of reasons and they can have effects aside from wasting your drive space. Various applications may install the same driver files, dll's, ocx's (activeX controls), etc. in numerous different locations on your system, or you may copy or download the same files into different folders on your system without knowing it. Sometimes the only result is wasted hard drive space, but extra files in the system area slow down your operating system's access to this important space. With Duplicate Finder, you can easily find and remove these duplicate files.

Does Duplicate Finder 2011 run on Linux / Mac systems?

No. Duplicate Finder is not yet available on the Linux platform.

You can use Samba on Linux systems to give Windows workstations access to the files kept on Linux boxes and then use Duplicate Finder from a Windows workstation. Simply map folders as drives on a PC workstation or use UNC path for folder to search. This way, you can find duplicate files on Linux systems, and delete or move them as you would on any network drive. Keep in mind that you need proper access rights in order to scan files (read access) and to delete them (write access). Since Linux filenames are case sensitive (unlike Windows filenames), always use CRC checksums because of the difference in case sensitivity. Performance may not be as good since more files will be have to be checked.
